Etymology
Liao is a Chinese surname with multiple origins. The most common derivation is from the Chinese character 廖 (Liào), which refers to an ancient state named Liao that existed during the Zhou dynasty in what is now Henan province. The surname also has roots in the Manchu-Tungusic Liao people. Additionally, some bearers of Liao descend from the minor state of Liao (蓼) during the Spring and Autumn period. The name is also associated with the Khitan-led Liao dynasty (907–1125), whose name derived from the Liao River in Manchuria.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Liao dynasty is the most historically prominent entity associated with this name. Originally a nomadic Khitan confederation, the Liao ruled over Manchuria and parts of northern China. The dynasty's name, chosen in 907, was taken from the Liao River. This river, flowing through Liaoning and Inner Mongolia, thus lent its name to a major period of Chinese history. After the fall of the dynasty, many Khitan people adopted Liao as their surname. The same character later became the name of a province, Liaoning, as well as a peninsula (Liaodong).
In modern times, the surname remains common in China, particularly in the southern regions, with a notable concentration in the Chaoshan area of Guangdong and Hunan province. According to legend, some Liao families changed their surname from Miao or from other names to avoid persecution during historical upheavals.
Notable Bearers
Notable individuals with the surname Liao include Liao Zhongkai (1877–1925), a Kuomintang politician and financier; Liao Chengzhi (1908–1983), a Chinese diplomat and socialist revolutionary; and Liao Xiaoping, a Chinese footballer. The political legacy also touches on Liao Yaoxiang, a Chinese general during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
