Calligaris is an Italian occupational surname derived from the Late Latin caligarius, meaning "shoemaker" (from caliga, a type of Roman military boot).The surname is most famously borne by several generations of Italian swimmers. Mauro Calligaris (1952–2000) and his sister Novella Calligaris (born 1954) were both Olympic swimmers; Novella won multiple medals at European championships.
